What the science says about temperature, surfaces, and burn risk
Every summer, dog owners are warned about hot pavement. But the actual numbers — how hot pavement gets, at what point it causes injury, and how air temperature relates to surface temperature — are rarely explained clearly. This guide covers the science so you can make informed decisions.

More importantly, pavement retains heat well into the evening. A sidewalk that reached 140°F at 2pm may still be 100°F at 7pm — warm enough to be uncomfortable for paw pads even as the air feels pleasant.
